Our Mission Statement
The mission of the San Diego Chapter of Quail Unlimited is to preserve and improve the natural habitat of quail primarily on public lands for the purpose of maintaining and hopefully increasing healthy quail populations, enhancing hunting opportunities, and for the general benefit of all wildlife.
Our efforts are designed to improve the habitat of quail, to the benefit of all types of birds and animals. Wildlife from mice to deer use the water sites we develop and the improved habitat provides food and shelter for all. This is accomplished through the following activities: 1) We rehabilitate water sites (Guzzlers) that were built in previous decades by various conservation groups including CCC, WPA, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and California Department of Fish and Game. Once restored, we regularly check and maintain them as necessary. 2) We develop new sites on public land. The focus is on providing water since it is the single most crucial element for survival. We supplement water sites by providing cover and food sources for wildlife. 3) We monitor quail populations by means of call routes and brood counts to assist the Department of Fish and Game in maintaining healthy populations of quail.
About Quail Unlimited
Quail Unlimited, Inc. is a national, non-profit conservation organization
dedicated to the preservation and reestablishment of crucial upland game
bird habitat vitally needed to sustain healthy populations of quail and
other upland game bird species. These goals are achieved through comprehensive
habitat management, research, and public education programs conducted
both by the national organization and its nationwide network of local
chapters.
Quail Unlimited chapters retain 60% of every dollar they raise for local
habitat, education, and access projects. Quail Unlimited's national office
has developed several matching fund programs with government and private
sources. Many western chapters have been able to put over 100% of the
money they raise back to work for wildlife by taking advantage of these
programs.
Hollenbeck Canyon:
Work at this Department of Fish and Game site in Rancho Jamul continues. Work has included drinker installation, crop
planting and irrigation, fence removal, non-indigenous plant removal,
dove roosting and nesting site construction, native Oak tree planting,
and debris removal. Projects will be continuing soon.
New Guzzler Installation:
Our chapter has completed the design, planning, and construction
of a new wildlife watering guzzler. The project coordinator was Eagle Scout, Brandon
Preddy.
He was provided financial assistance, manpower, and technical expertise
by quail unlimited as needed. The site location was approved
by all affected government agencies. This was SDQU's first new
guzzler installed on public land and our biggest project to
date and the birds love it.
